How Pizza Packets Will Make Your Pizzeria Stand Out

Most pizzerias supply their pizza spices in the usual, mundane way. They set them in shakers at each little table and sometimes not even that. I can’t recount how many times I have had to interrupt another person’s meal to ask if I can borrow their garlic because my table doesn’t have any. And when I’m taking a pie out, I often have to stop and open the box and put spices on there. If I forget, I go home with spice-less pizza and I’m disappointed later.

But if your pizzeria has spice packets, your customers won’t have this issue. If chinese food restaurants have been giving out their sauces in packets for as long as human kind has existed, why can’t pizzerias hand out their spices?

If you supply your take out orders with a few in the bag before they are delivered and have them readily available on the counter for anyone else to grab, everything goes smoother. People can avoid that dreaded moment when they shake far too much red pepper out of the shaker and ruin their slice. And they don’t have to interrupt a complete stranger just so they can enjoy some oregano.

Pizza Spices Can Save That Frozen Pizza

We all have done it. We’ve stocked up the fridge with frozen pizza because it was on sale and it just makes dinner easy for the week. Sometimes you’d rather just pop something in the microwave than spend the money on a fresh pie. I mean getting a plain pie is expensive enough, but adding toppings is even worse.

But frozen pizza is missing something. It’s missing that fresh, gooey cheese and the warmth of a brick oven. It’s also missing really good pizza spices.

Some frozen pizza does have spices on it, but they never really taste like much. After all, they tend to lose that flavor after being a solid brick for so long. But if you get your own spice packets, you can add your own spices after you reheat your dinner. That way you don’t have to settle for what your given. Adding your own fresh flavors to it will make your otherwise bland dinner taste pretty awesome.

So don’t fret if all you’ve got this week is some frozen pepperoni pizza to keep you nourished. You can add your own oregano or red pepper, close your eyes and pretend like it’s a slice of heaven from Italy itself.

The Most Common Pizza Spices At Your Pizzeria

When you walk into your neighborhood pizzeria and you pick up the pie you ordered, do you often stop to consider what pizza spices they may have on hand? Most people don’t carry all the basics in their own kitchen and sometimes it’s easier to cover your pizza in what you like before heading back home. Every pizzeria has to have these pizza spices:

Oregano: Oregano is the classic. It has a  slightly bitter taste and usually a strong but overwhelmingly delicious smell. If your pizzeria doesn’t have oregano, it’s a crime against pizza.

Garlic: Garlic is great on any food, but works wonderfully on pizza. It’s also said to have multiple health benefits, having a little bit every day being good for your heart. What a nice excuse to add a pile on to your next slice!

Red Pepper: Red pepper is for those who want a little extra kick on their pizza. Usually flaky, red pepper should be used with caution to avoid gasping for air and a sudden need of water. Unless you can’t live without spicy, then apply this pizza spice liberally.

Parmesan: Parmesan is for those who want more cheese on their cheese. In all truth, it adds an extra texture and taste as the cheese on a typical pizza pie is usually mozzarella, so the two blends of cheese make for happy taste buds.

Regional Varieties of Pizza Spices

A St. Louis Style Pizza

Pizza has become as American as it is Italian. There are many regional varieties. In this post we will examine the most popular.

New York: Perhaps the most famous slice to have pizza spices, this thin-crust, wide slice is meant to be folded in half, and makes for superb snack food. The sweetness of the crust is often attributed to New York’s excellent water supply.

Chicago: Deep dish, thick crust, this pizza is made for a menagerie of pizza spices. The preparation acts like a bowl for the numerous toppings and heavy spices.

California: Invented in the 1980s, this style combines a New York flat-crust with California-type ingredients, such as eggs, pesto, barbecue, and goat cheese. Fresh vegetables like artichokes and brocolini are often used. And although they come in a pie, they are single-serving pizzas.

Hawaiian: This pizza has Canadian bacon and pineapple on it. Despite its name, this pizza does not come from Hawaii; it was invented by Germans.

St. Louis: This style of pizza spice is cut into small rectangular pieces. It has super-thin, yeastless crust, and is much like a cracker. It is often made with Provel cheese, a blend of Provelone, white cheddar and Swiss, and is more heavily flavored with pizza spices like oregano than other regional pizzas.

Show the Slice Who’s Boss With Pizza Spices

spicesYou walk into the pizza parlor (funny how we use that word to describe a pizza shop. Is it just for the alliteration? Or does pizza deserve a word apart from the prosaic? I lean towards the latter). Inhale the garlic, oregano, tomato sauce and all the other pizza spices that fill your nostrils with memories of youth.

You choose which slice you want and wait for it to get hot in the big oven. He hands it to you on a paper plate with the scalloped edges and the cheesy tip hanging over. You take it eagerly and sit down with your pizza spices, ready to assemble. Parmesan, red pepper, garlic powder, what other spices do you want?

You take the first bite inhaling and feeling the hot cheesy goodness against the roof of your mouth. You chomp hungrily, eagerly. When you were little the best bite was always the tip, and you couldn’t save it, unless you wanted to eat the crust first, and as a child you didn’t like the crust.

You fold it in half and watch the grease drop from the back. Take another bite and you get too much cheese. You have to bite it and still it doesn’t want to part. So you pull the stringy mozerella away from your mouth and add some more spices to show that slice who’s boss.

The Different Applications of Pizza Spices

SPICES

Spiced Roast Chicken

I love pizza. Whenever I get a slice, I add all the pizza spices to it. It’s important to have the right balance of oregano, parmesan, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper. Together, these pizza spices add the right balance of spice, umami, and savory flavors. The best thing about these flavors is the way they come together to complement each other and enhance certain toppings. While they taste great on any plain cheese pizza, pizza spices also bring out the layers of flavor in sausage, onion, pepperoni, mushroom bell peppers and many other popular pizza toppings.

But these delicious pizza spices can also be used in different cuisines. If your salad is tasting a little bland these days, or perhaps you want to add some flavor to chicken or a noodle dish, these pizza spices are the way to do so. Throw away that MSG-filled spice packet in your ramen noodles, and try the flavors of real spices instead. You can also add pizza spices to many frozen foods to enhance the taste without any extra fats or preservatives.

Once you’ve experimented with these spice packets, you can find many different applications for them. Keep your eyes open – you never know what needs some added spices!
